CMU SEI collateral library

overview

role: graphic designer

responsibilities:

The SEI collateral library includes several print materials including information sheets, brochures, pamphlets, booklets, postcards, and maps. Hundreds of different pieces, covering thousands of different topics, in all shapes, sizes, and colors. My job was to organize and display these pieces in a legible way for employees to order.

My efforts included building an internal web catalog, creating an organizing a file archive, creating order forms, organizing a shared file service with campus print services, and constructing a physical location that employees could stop by to pick up a pack on the fly. I maintained files on the server, web catalog, and shared printer file service simultaneously. While doing all of this, I also spent time updating outdated pieces to current brand guidelines. I streamlined this process for myself and future designers by building complex, yet highly functional templates.

updating and redesigning

To begin the process of establishing the collateral library, I reviewed all collateral assets and reviewed them to ensure their design and content were up to date. Design elements and architecture were translated through the new brand system and tidied up. I teamed up with the technical writing team and set up an on-the-go validation system in which they could read, write, and approve one step ahead of design so the process never halted.

building the library

As an addition to the collateral update project, I was tasked with creating an internal wiki where members of the SEI could learn more about our branding materials and order some if needed. The platform was built on Jira.

creating the ordering process

I coordinated with CMU’s campus printing service in order to create an order form that didn’t require direct communication with the printer. I started by establishing product numbers and print standards for each product. This way, results were consistent and avoided confusing users of the order form.
